Parish History

St. George Orthodox Cathedral, located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala, is a revered landmark with deep historical and spiritual significance for the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Established in 1900, this Cathedral was consecrated by Saint Geevarghese Mar Gregorios, popularly known as Parumala Thirumeni in the presence of Mar Joseph Dionysius who was the Malankara Metropolitan.

The church was founded during the reign of the Travancore Kingdom, at a time when the Christian community in the city was rapidly growing. It was built to meet the spiritual needs of the faithful and serve as a focal point for worship, fellowship, and Christian education. Dedicated to St. George, the cathedral honors the memory of the patron saint, who is venerated as a protector of the Christian faith and a symbol of courage and devotion.

Over the years, St. George Orthodox Cathedral has undergone several phases of expansion and renovation. The Church was evelated as Cathedral on 23-6-1991 By H.H Baselius Marthoma Mathews II, Catholicos of the East & Malankara Metropolitan in the presence of H.G Geevarghese Mar Dioscorus, Metropolitan of Thiruvananthapuram Diocese

The cathedral is especially famous for its annual feast in honor of St. George, which attracts thousands of devotees from near and far. This grand celebration, which includes a procession, liturgical services, and cultural programs, is a highlight of the liturgical calendar and an occasion for the community to come together in prayer and fellowship.
